Fishing and lobstering are still the mainstay of the local economy in many of the Blue Hill peninsula area’s idyllic villages, which include Bucks Harbor, Castine, Blue Hill, Sedgwick, Brooklin, Brooksville, Penobscot, Deer Isle, Stonington and Surry. For over a century, the peninsula has attracted artists, craftspeople, writers, sailors and summer vacationers, drawn to the area for its incredible natural beauty, privacy, pretty harbors, and traditional way of life. These charming towns offer art galleries, shops, restaurants, and inns, and there is a wide range of services and amenities available, including full-service hospitals, in nearby Blue Hill and in Ellsworth. There are private airports in Blue Hill and Stonington, and airports with commercial service are located in Bar Harbor.
